On December 7, 2007, a ship loaded with oil was sailing near a small seaside town in Tae-an, South Korea, and crashed. The accident caused 78,918 barrels (158.9 liters) of oil to spill into the sea. Keep in mind that one barrel is 42 gallons, so a huge amount of oil is spilled into the sea. The spill spread due to unseasonably warm weather, strong waves, and unexpected wind directions. It polluted at least 30 beaches and caused over 200 sea farms to lose their stocks. Tar covered seagulls, mallards, oysters, crabs, and clams. Government officials regarded the event as South Korea’s worst oil spill and declared a state of disaster.
This terrible event led many people to notice the harm done to the environment. The spill was destroying the ocean and beach where many animals and plants live. It also made people realize that the oil was dangerous for humans too. This encouraged them to clean up the beaches through campaigns. More than 1 million people came out to clean up the oil spill. They wiped rocks covered with tar and even lifted up light stones to clean underneath. They also cleaned up each piece of gravel, sand, and soil one by one. 4,200 organizations and individuals donated more than 7 billion won (6 million dollars) to the cause. Everyone’s dedication helped restore the sea to its original condition and ecosystem.
The South Chungcheong provincial government, which oversees Tea-an, honored the hard work. They built a monument and established a memorial hall to remember the experience.
This event teaches us a very important lesson. We have the power to protect and heal our planet. And this is a critical mission we have to do! 2007년 12월 7일, 한국의 충청남도에 위치한 태안이라는 작은 해변 마을에 기름을 실은 배가 항해를 하던 중 다른 배와 충돌하는 사고가 발생했어요. 이 사고로 인해 엄청나게 많은 양의 기름이 바다로 흘러나왔죠. 흘러나온 기름의 양은 78,918 (158.9리터) 배럴이었어요. 1배럴이 42갤런인 것을 생각해본다면, 엄청나게 많은 양의 기름이 바다로 흘러나온 거예요. 그리고 그 기름들은 시간이 지날수록 점점 퍼져나가기 시작했어요. 유출된 기름은 바다에 사는 모든 동식물들을 병들게 하였고, 바다의 생태계를 위협하고 해변에까지 들어와 마을까지도 오염시키고 말았어요.
태안군민들이 모두 절망에 빠져 있을 때 아주 놀라운 일들이 일어났어요. 전국 각지에서 100만 명이 넘는 자원봉사자들이 태안을 찾아와 수작업으로 일일이 기름때를 제거하기 시작한 거예요. 죽어가는 바다를 되살리고 주민들의 생계와 건강을 지키기 위해 수많은 자원봉사자가 기계로 닦을 수 없는 곳을 걸레로 구석구석 문질러 청소했어요. 그렇다면 지금 태안의 바다는 어떤 모습일까요?
30년에서 많게는 100년까지 걸릴지 모른다던 전문가들의 예상과 달리, 태안은 10년 만에 원래의 모습을 되찾았어요. 다시 깨끗한 모습을 되찾은 태안의 해변에 다양한 생물들이 터전을 이루며 살고 있지요. 수많은 사람의 손길이 모여 일구어낸 의미 있는 일이었어요. 그래서인지 태안의 바다가 더 아름다워 보이지 않나요?
친구들, 우리도 노력하면 지구를 다시 깨끗하게 만들 수 있어요. 환경 보호를 위해 우리가 직접 행동하는 것, 이것이 우리의 중요한 임무인 거예요! 한국 사람들은 이것을 잊지 않기 위해 모든 과정을 기록한 기념관과 비석을 세웠어요.
