Did you know that Earth Day started 50 years ago? Americans created Earth Day in 1970 to educate others about environmental issues. Now, people from all over the world celebrate the holiday in some form. In South Korea, people take part in Sik-mog-il (Arbor Day) that was established 70 years ago on April 5th by planting trees and other plants.

April 5th was considered the beginning of spring ever since ancient days, and it is best suited for planting trees and flowers. This was also the day when King Seongjong, the ninth king of the Joseon Dynasty (1457–1494), plowed the fields himself to show his people that it’s time to start farming. This is why Koreans still associate this date with planting.
In South Korea, 70% of the land consists of wooded mountains. Those trees are a great resource for building material, paper, and many other things. However, during occupation and wars, many trees were burned or otherwise cleared.
This left the mountains naked and vulnerable. With this on South Korea’s mind, on April 5, 1949, the President created Sik-mog-il to support the protection of the forest. People gathered to plant trees in the mountains and parks on that day. As of 2006, Sik-mog-il is no longer a public holiday, and each person now plants trees and flowers on their own.
Have you ever gone to the forest on a hot summer’s day? Did you feel the coolness of the shade? A fully grown tree evaporates 400 liters of water a day, which is why you’ll find that forests are lower in temperature. This cooling effect is like running 12 air conditioners! This is why planting a tree is one of the easiest ways to help our planet and stop global warming*. Keeping the Earth cool is important, but trees also do a lot of other helpful things. They release oxygen into the air, prevent soil erosion, and filter pollutants. By planting a tree, you are doing your part in protecting the environment and the animals who call Earth home.

4월 5일은 한반도에 봄이 오기 시작하는 날로 나무와 꽃을 심기에 가장 적합한 날이에요. 그리고 이 날은 조선의 아홉 번째 왕 성종(1457–1494년)이 직접 밭을 갈아 백성들에게 농사의 시작을 알리고, 백성들은 왕을 쫓아 열심히 밭을 일구었던 역사가 있는 날이기도 해요. 이러한 의미로 4월 5일을 식목일로 기념하여 지키고 있지요.
한국은 땅의 70%가 산으로 이루어져 있어요. 산에 있는 나무는 집을 짓거나 종이를 비롯한 많은 물건을 만들 수 있는 아주 큰 자원이었어요. 하지만 한국에서 일어난 여러 전쟁으로 많은 산과 나무들이 불에 타 없어졌고 여기저기 벌거벗은 산들이 많이 생겨났어요. 그래서 온 국민이 함께 나무를 심고 숲을 보호하고자, 1949년 대통령령으로 4월 5일을 식목일로 제정하였어요. 2006년부터 토요일을 휴일로 바꾸면서 식목일을 포함한 몇몇 기념일들이 공휴일에서 제외되었지만, 많은 사람들은 여전히 자연의 중요성을 되새기며 식목일에 좋아 하는 나무와 꽃을 심고 있어요.
